A delightful miniature for solo piano from this little-known Amercian composer.
Emma Kate Simmons was born on 3rd March 1850, the daughter of Joseph Ferris Simmons, a banker (who lived from 1817 to 1879) and Mary Sophia Gleason (1817-1872).
On 14th September 1882, accompanied by Mr and Mrs Isaac How from New York, she was robbed on a carriage ride in Green Mountain at Mount Desert Island, Maine.
She donated the proceeds from her musical compositions to charity and, from the sale of the Racquet Galop, endowed a permanent bed in St Luke's Hospital.
She married industrial capitalist, 'father of trusts' Charles Ranlett Flint (1850-1934), who was President of United States Electric Lighting Co. in 1880 and on the board of directors of IBM from 1924 to 1930.
From 1900 to 1920 she resided with her husband and 3 to 6 servants (choose from: housemaid, chambermaid, kitchenmaid, ladiesmaid, parlormaid, laundress, waitress, cook and/or butler!) at 4 East 36th Street, Manhattan. She was residing at 270 Park Avenue when she died on 8th March 1926 and was buried at Green Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.
Her other pieces for solo piano include: Racquet Galop, Invincible Galop, Berceuse, El Fresco Waltz and From East to West Waltz.
